I’m having issues with Passkeys

If you're having trouble setting up or using your passkey, this guide will help you resolve common issues.
Before you start, here are steps that commonly help:
  • Android: Open in Chrome
  • iOS: Open in Safari
  • Enable screen lock on your device (PIN, fingerprint, or Face ID)
  • Update your device and browser to the latest version
  • Restart phone - sometimes this helps as well

Common Error Messages

"Passkey setup was blocked" (NotAllowedError)

This error occurs when your browser or device blocks passkey creation. This is the most common issue and can happen for several reasons.

Android Devices

Try these solutions in order:
  1. Exit Incognito/Private mode - Use regular Chrome instead
  1. Sign into Google account - Make sure you're signed into a Google account in Chrome
  1. Enable phone screen lock - Go to Settings > Security and set up a PIN, pattern, or biometric lockso
  1. Turn off VPN temporarily - Some VPN or privacy apps can interfere with passkeys
  1. Update your apps - Update Google Play Services and Chrome to the latest versions
⚠️ Important Note for Budget Android Devices: Lower-end Android devices (like some Redmi, Realme, or other budget brands) may require recent security updates for passkeys to work properly. If your device hasn't received security patches in over 6 months, passkey support may be limited even with screen lock enabled.

iOS Devices (iPhone/iPad)

Try these solutions:
  1. Exit Private Browsing - Use regular Safari instead of Private Browsing mode
  1. Enable Face ID/Touch ID - Go to Settings and make sure Face ID or Touch ID is enabled
  1. Enable iCloud Keychain - Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Passwords and Keychain, and turn on iCloud Keychain
  1. Turn off VPN temporarily - Disable any VPN apps while setting up your passkey

Desktop/Web Browsers

Try these solutions:
  1. Exit Incognito/Private mode - Use a regular browser window
  1. Open In Chrome - if you use a different browser, try Chrome (or Safari on Mac)
  1. Check security settings - Ensure your browser allows passkeys/security keys
  1. Restart your browser - Close and reopen your browser completely
  1. Update your browser and OS - Make sure you have the latest updates installed

"Credential manager is busy" (NotReadableError)

This error means your device's credential manager is temporarily unavailable.

Android Devices

  1. Restart your device - A simple restart usually fixes this
  1. Update Google Play Services - Make sure Google Play Services is up to date
  1. Enable screen lock - Go to Settings > Security and enable screen lock if it's not already on

Other Devices

  1. Wait a moment - The credential manager may be processing another request
  1. Restart your device - This refreshes the credential manager
  1. Try again - The issue is usually temporary

"A passkey already exists for this device" (InvalidStateError)

You've already created a passkey for this account on this device. You can:
  • Use your existing passkey to sign in
  • Or delete the existing passkey from your device's password manager and create a new one

"Passkeys are not supported on this device" (NotSupportedError)

Your device or browser doesn't support passkeys. To use passkeys, you need:
  • iOS/iPadOS: Version 16 or later
  • Android: Version 9 or later with updated Google Play Services
  • Desktop: Recent version of Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox
  • Screen lock: PIN, pattern, password, or biometric authentication must be enabled

General Troubleshooting Tips

If none of the above solutions work, try these additional steps:
  1. Clear browser cache - Clear your browser's cache and cookies, then try again
  1. Try a different browser - Test with Chrome, Safari, or Edge to see if the issue is browser-specific
  1. Check browser extensions - Disable password managers or security extensions temporarily
  1. Update your device - Make sure your operating system has the latest updates
  1. Check date and time - Ensure your device's date and time are set correctly
